3 Ways to Avoid Wasting A Great Opportunity
Job searching is hard. Everyone knows that. The problem is, very few people talk about the advantages of being in a full-time job search. This season offers a great opportunity to change the way you work, the way you think, and the way you think about thinking. Here are three ideas to help you get started so you don't miss another opportunity to change:
Flexible schedule. This may be the first time in your career you haven't been expected to be at your desk from a certain time in the morning to a certain time in the evening. Take advantage of the flexibility! Go to the gym at 11 AM. Avoid long lines at Costco by getting there when they open in the morning. Start your mornings slowly, with a good book and a big cup of coffee. Take advantage of this opportunity and create the schedule that makes the most sense to you.
Time to work. In my last three positions I would often mention (complain) to my husband that I spent so much time in meetings I didn't have time to do the work that was discussed in those meetings. The beauty of this season of your life is that you probably don't have nearly as many meetings, so knock the items off your to do list for your job search and then go do something else.
Time to think. Again, most of us don't have a lot of time during a "typical" work day to just think. What is working well? What needs to change? How do I need to improve? We spend much of our working lives reacting. Try to spend time every day trying to answer the questions that will really improve your life and help you better understand what your next role should look like.
Over time, these practices will help you focus on what's important and help you organize your time to be more efficient.
